5 pattern drenching mistakes that could ruin your scheme

Pattern drenching is the perfect aesthetic for maximalists or anyone who’s fallen in love with a particular wallpaper and can’t get enough of it on just one wall.

This daring trend – which involves using one pattern throughout a space (similarly to colour drenching) – isn’t particularly new, but it’s still a popular choice in many homes and is a great way to add colour, personality, and a touch of fun to an interior scheme.

If you’re keen to give pattern drenching a go in your home, there are a few common mistakes you’ll need to know about first, which our team of interior designers explain below.

1. Half-committing

If you’re feeling nervous at the idea of covering your entire room in one pattern, you might be tempted to dip your toe into the trend by using it here and there – but Mirela Bajic, Senior Garden Designer at House Designer, says this won’t look any good.

“The mistake I see most is half committing. One wall and a cushion isn’t pattern drenching. It just looks like you ran out of wallpaper,” she says,

If you’re struggling with decision fatigue and can’t make up your mind about whether pattern drenching is right for your home, start with a smaller space, such as a downstairs toilet or study.

2. Choosing the wrong pattern or colour

While a print might look lovely on a sample, it’s a whole different ball game when you pattern drench a room in it, as the effect becomes amplified.

With this in mind, Mirela Bajic recommends “choosing a pattern that’s two notches quieter than the one you first fall in love with” so the room doesn’t become too overwhelming.

“People often blame the pattern when a drenched room feels chaotic, but it’s usually the colour contrast that’s the problem. Tonal patterns, where the colours sit close together, create a much calmer, cocooning effect than bold, high contrast prints,” she adds.

3. Not including a rest wall

As we previously mentioned, half-committing to pattern drenching isn’t going to do your room any favours – but you still need some sort of restpite. Whether it’s a plain headboard or simple curtains, Mirela suggests having a few features that balance the pattern out.

“When every surface competes for attention, a space can quickly feel overwhelming rather than considered,” says Ryan Wenham, Chartered Architect at Larsen Architecture.

“The most successful interiors still have moments of calm. Layering texture, natural materials and a restrained palette creates depth without visual noise, allowing a room to feel timeless, elegant and genuinely comfortable to live in.”

4. Overlooking awkward areas

In order for pattern drenching to work, you’ll need to consider every aspect of your room – including those awkward nooks, such as alcoves, shelving and built-in storage, according to Melissa Denham, interior design expert at Hammonds Furniture.

“These spaces are the perfect opportunity to introduce patterns without overwhelming the room. Adding patterned wallpaper behind open shelving or within alcoves can help create depth and visual interest while tying the wide scheme together.”

5. Not having a clear palette

Before you whip out the wallpaper and mix as many patterns as you can get your hands on, it’s worth having a clear palette in mind to ensure everything ties together.

While there are no rules against combining multiple prints, Melissa Denham recommends balancing small and large designs and using colours that complement each other for a curated feel.

“One of the biggest mistakes people make when pattern drenching is assuming it’s simply a case of layering as many prints as possible into a room. This trend is more than just throwing together random patterns,” she explains.
