Borderlands 4 Switch 2 release canceled indefinitely
The release date was originally planned for Oct. 4 last year
It’s a terrible day for gamers who were waiting for Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 4 to make its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 this year: it’s no longer happening.
The news comes after Take-Two Interactive announced during its latest quarterly earnings call on Tuesday that it was pausing development of the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Borderlands 4. The title was originally released in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Sept. 12, with a release for Nintendo’s latest console set for Oct. 4. However, October came and went, and news about when the looter-shooter would appear on the platform was scarce.
Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis later confirmed the decision in a comment made to Variety. “We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU,” Lewis told Variety. “Our focus continues to be delivering quality post-launch content for players on the ongoing improvements to optimize the game. We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo. We have PGA Tour 2K25 coming out and WWE 2K26 [for Switch 2], and we’re incredibly excited about bringing more of our titles to that platform in the future.”
According to Variety, the title’s Nintendo Switch 2 release was removed from Take-Two’s chart of upcoming games, where it was listed as having a “TBA” release date. On the official 2K store website, Borderlands 4 is still listed as available on the Nintendo Switch 2. However, any option to pre-order a copy has been disabled. The dream of playing the latest Borderlands on the Nintendo Switch 2 looks like it may never materialize.
It’s a crushing blow for Nintendo gamers, and a sad end for Gearbox Software’s reimagined and revamped looter-shooter. Polygon previously applauded Borderlands 4 for doing something new and shaking up a 15-year-old formula. It’s just a shame that Nintendo gamers won’t get to play it themselves.
